Things to know if you want to get cheap health insurance

1. Going off without health insurance will cost you more than having one.
What you really shouldn't save your money on is insurance coverage. You could face hundreds of dollars in bills from a simple accident, imagine the burden of a serious illness on your family budget.

2. Don't hesitate if your employer has a health insurance program.
Even if you feel healthy and young, group health insurance program offered by your employer would be a great thing to consider joining. And don't even hesitate if you are not so healthy and are well pass your twenties.

3. Take time to compare different health insurance plans.
Unlike the case of auto insurance, there's no such thing as a standard policy when it comes to health insurance. Different plans mean different types and amount of coverage, and the costs  differ respectively. Not saying that different companies will offer different plans. So take your time and study thoroughly every insurance plan you are offered.

4. Cheap health insurance is not always about the lowest premium.
Types and amount of coverage your health insurance plan provides is more important than the price itself. Cheap health insurance is all about getting the most benefits for the lowest price for such a set of features.

5. Even good coverage can have big loopholes.
There's a wide set of conditions of services (like mental health, vision and dental care) that are still not included even in plans with a good overall coverage. These services are strictly optional so be careful when reading through the contract.

6. Freedom of choice will cost you more.
Expect to go only with a pre-set list of healthcare providers if you looking for cheap health insurance plans with the widest coverage possible. Having the possibility to choose between specialists and facilities will cost you in additional premiums or co-payments.

7. Check out the healthcare provider network you are thinking of signing a plan with.
There are numerous sources, both public and private, that can provide you with the information on facilities, specialists and health insurance plans.

8. Losing your job doesn't mean losing your insurance.
In case you leave your job, you can still have your health insurance coverage according to state and federal regulations. But they don't protect you against high insurance expenditures.

9. There's a lot to think about for working couples.
In case you and your spouse are able to get health insurance coverage from your employers, you should think whether it is necessary for you to have two policies, or just have one covering both of you. If you have children, you should think about who's policy will cover them.

10. Get a tax break.
Healthcare expenditures (and health insurance premiums being a part of them) are not tax deductible until they make up 7.5 percent of your income. Still, in case your employer has a flexible spending account or you are an individual entrepreneur you can opt for a tax reduction without respecting the limits.
